The term “Deep State” has become in vogue lately as a descriptor of unelected government officials trying to undermine the will of the people. However, some in the media have begun saying that the suggestion is nothing more than a conspiracy theory.
If you want some evidence for the “Deep State,” you need look no further than the testimony of former CIA Director John Brennan before the House Intelligence Committee on May 23.
During that testimony, Brennan said he “encountered and am aware of information and intelligence that revealed contacts and interactions between Russian officials and U.S. persons involved in the Trump campaign that I was concerned about because of known Russian efforts to suborn such individuals,” according to The New York Times. That’s what caused him to contact the FBI and press for an investigation.
Sounds compelling. However, as the Washington Times points out, Brennan didn’t name either the Russian officials or the vague “U.S. persons involved in the Trump campaign” that caused him concern. Nor did he know what was said.
And, perhaps even most disturbing was the fact that even though he has publicly expressed his dislike for Trump, he still set the wheels of the FBI investigation rolling by contacting the Bureau about the information. He also kept President Barack Obama abreast of the details, even though the president was literally Hillary Clinton’s most powerful supporter.
“I wanted to make sure that every information and bit of intelligence that we had was shared with the bureau so that they could take it,” Brennan said.
“It was well beyond my mandate as director of CIA to follow on any of those leads that involved U.S. persons. But I made sure that anything that was involving U.S. persons, including anything involving the individuals involved in the Trump campaign, was shared with the bureau.”
Brennan said that this “served as the basis for the FBI investigation to determine whether such collusion (or) cooperation occurred.”
We’ve still received no concrete evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians, even 11 months after the FBI’s investigation began. However, that hasn’t stopped the media from discussing it endlessly. This is partially thanks to an Obama appointee and loyalist, John Brennan.
That sounds a lot like the “Deep State” to me.
