You’re not gonna believe this.
This just might be one of the greatest phone scams ever.
The BBC reports that a woman in China enlisted 20 men to each buy her an iPhone X, which she then sold for $120,000 Chinese yuan (about $18,000) and promptly bought a house.
The now-viral story claims that a Chinese blogger is known as “Proud Qiaboa” penned a blog post about her friend, “Xiaoli” from Shenzen, China. Proud revealed that Xiaoli asked all of her 20 boyfriends (damn!) to buy her an iPhone X, which she quickly sold to a mobile phone recycling site called Hui Shou Bao, and then used the proceeds to snap up a sweet house in the Chinese countryside.
“[Xiaoli] is not from a wealthy family,” Proud Qiaoba wrote in her blog post, according to the BBC. “Her mum is a housewife and her dad is a migrant worker, and she is the oldest daughter. Her parents are getting old and she might be under a lot of pressure hoping to buy them a house…But it’s still unbelievable that she could use this method!”
The BBC reports that the tale has gone absolutely viral in China:
A hashtag which translates as ’20 mobiles for a house’ quickly began to circulate on Weibo, and became the country’s top trend. It has now been used in excess of 13 million times.
Many social media users, like ‘small sand is growing’, have expressed admiration for Xiaoli.
“I can’t even find one boyfriend. She can actually find 20 boyfriends at the same time and even get them to buy her an iPhone X. Just want to ask her to teach me such skills.”
Another, ‘TST’ praised her enterprising nature, saying that she has “a bright future.”
But others haven’t been so complimentary.
‘Little Bee’ wrote that Xiaoli was “the most shameless person”.
The question is, who were these so-called “boyfriends” and do they feel dumb or impressed right about now?
