Indiana Billboard Results in Outrage After Insulting the Prophet Muhammad

Share this post:

Some Muslim groups in Indianapolis are outraged over a billboard that insults the prophet Muhammad, even though he is never actually called out by name.

The largely black-and-white sign, overlooking the southbound lanes of I-465, is headlined with the words “The Perfect Man.”

Underneath that headline are points describing that man, which include “married a 6-year-old,” “slave owner & dealer,” “beheaded 600 Jews in one day,” and “13 wives, 11 at one time,” and “Rapist.”

The bottom of the billboard reads, in yellow type, “Educate Truthophobes.”

Of course, Muslims are calling for those who erected the display to reveal themselves.

“It is a horrible billboard. I’m outraged by it, but saddened at the same time …  and I would like to know who is behind it,” Rima Shahid, executive director of the Muslim Alliance of Indiana, told the Indianapolis Star. Shahid added that the bill board seemed “cowardly.”

Indiana U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, a Democrat, also took issue with the sign, saying he believed it was untrue and that the billboard’s creators took matters out of context to justify their bigotry.

U.S. Sen. Todd Young, an Indiana Republican, condemned the sign.

It’s worth noting that the sign never once mentioned Muslims, Muhammad or Islam, yet Muslim groups were apparently the only ones to become offended by it.

In Islamic belief, Muhammad is considered the “perfect man” as the chosen messenger for the Quran. The makers of the billboard, obviously disagree.

The Star reported that a Virginia-based outdoor advertising seller, LightPoint Impressions, was responsible for the billboard.

Don Woodsmall, listed as a principal on the firm’s website, told the Star in a statement that he sold the ad to a “group of patriotic Americans” who were denied advertising by national companies.

He declined to identify the group, saying that it requested anonymity.
